1 on 1 care at Girl Fit Physical Therapy in Newton

The physical therapists at Girl Fit Physical Therapy specialize in the unique needs of active girls. Our philosophy is based upon evidence based medicine, creating personalized plans of care for each individual patient, and treating the whole person.

We work one on one with each patient to find the right combination of pain free strengthening and flexibility, activity modification, and training in movement and body mechanics to decrease stress on the body and to allow for more efficient, safe, and pain free movement. Specialized services, which may be incorporated into your physical therapy care at Girl Fit, include video running (gait) analysis, dynamometry strength testing, and Blood Flow Restriction therapy, a technique used to increase strength after surgery or injury. We also provide custom fitting for orthotics.

Our physical therapists are trained in manual therapy, soft tissue/deep tissue release techniques, Graston Technique, trigger point and functional dry needling, cupping, and many other specialized treatment techniques. While we value the use of manual therapy to help you get better, we want to help you move smoothly into an independent strength program to STAY better.

We will help you reach your goals and cheer you on along the way. We value patient education above all else, and strive to help every patient understand why their injury occurred, how to get better, and how to prevent that (and other!) injuries from occurring again. We will work with each patient to develop a strong home exercise program from day one; and we want you to feel confident and independent in keeping yourself injury free upon discharge.

therapeutic exercise

Paramount to physical therapy is therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education (balance, proprioception, and posture), and improving a patient’s movement and body mechanics.  While manual therapy and other speciality techniques can help start the healing process, therapeutic exercise builds the strength, flexibility, and improved movement needed to move toward full recovery from an injury, long term injury prevention, and independence.

manual therapy

Consists of a variety of different techniques where the physical therapist is using their hands or a tool to apply pressure, massage, stretch, or mobilization of soft tissue, muscles, fascia, or joints. The aim of any type of manual therapy is to decrease perceived tightness in an area, bring blood flow to the tissue, decrease restrictions and improve mobility. Manual therapy is a great way to decrease the sensitivity of painful tissues and help increase the tolerance for movement and strengthening which will ultimately promote healing and lead to independence in staying injury free.

gait analysis

Performed by video analysis of a client running on the treadmill. The video can be slowed down and paused at specific times during the gait cycle to measure joint angles and assess any deviations in form. From this analysis, your physical therapist can determine if changes in your running form may be needed to address your pain or efficiency.

IASTM

This is a type of manual therapy that utilizes stainless steel instruments to change the perception or feeling of tightness in the muscles and fascia. It is important to stretch and strengthen the treated muscle after this technique to maximize the effectiveness. The goal of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is to decrease perceived tightness in an area, increase blood flow, decrease restrictions, and improve mobility.

dry needling

Targets muscular restrictions by inserting a very fine filament needle through the skin to the deeper tissues, targeting the muscular trigger point. The goal of trigger point and functional dry needling is to decrease perceived tightness in an area, decrease restrictions, and improve mobility.  The best results from dry needling occur in conjunction with a strong therapeutic exercise program.

cupping

A type of manual therapy that utilizes plastic cups and a negative pressure/suction to lift the skin and superficial layers of fascia. This lifting helps bring increased blood flow to the area as well as providing decompression and a stretch to the tissue being treated. The goal of cupping is to decrease perceived tightness in an area, increase blood flow, decrease restrictions, and improve mobility.

pregnancy & postpartum pelvic health

We all know the female body undergoes a lot of changes during the nine months spent growing a baby. After giving birth, it seems we sometimes forget that those changes do not just instantly reverse.  Physical therapists can help women regain core function and return to their previous activities in a smart and safe way.

Pelvic health physical therapy is a branch of physical therapy that treats dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles. Pregnancy and postpartum pelvic health physical therapy can help address urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pre and postnatal pain with intercourse and more.

post operative care

Post operative physical therapy may start with a rehabilitation protocol provided by your surgeon, but your care and progress should always be closely monitored and tailored to your unique needs.  We provide one on one treatments, dynamometry for precise measurement of strength, electrical stimulation to improve muscle activation post surgery, and the option of Blood Flow Restriction therapy, a technique used to increase strength after surgery. Girl Fit Physical Therapy provides a positive, supportive, and motivating environment for girls and women to recover from surgery, regain range of motion, build strength, improve movement and body mechanics which may have contributed to their original injury, and return to the activities they love with strength and confidence.
